JOB DESCRIPTION
Our large nonprofit client headquartered in DC is looking for a Fact Checker. The fact checker will conduct basic fact-checking and comprehensive project research for the editorial team using print and digital sources. This position must be skilled in utilizing web-based tools and software versions of online research platforms.
This is a long-term, 40-hour-a-week W2 contract. All McKinley roles include a competitive benefits package.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate the organization’s content for factual accuracy and verify quotes and expert contributions
- Provide recommendations and alternatives to editors to ensure factual accuracy
- Execute front-end research for internal stakeholders on specified content projects and deliverables
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and other partners to ensure the content aligns with the organization’s priorities and mission, enterprise brand strategy, and brand architecture
- Provide appropriate documentation of fact-checking materials for archiving
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, journalism or communications
- 3+ years of professional experience at a major newspaper, magazine, or website
- Skilled at gathering information from various sources
- Must be able to translate complex statistical and technical data into plain English
- Demonstrate significant autonomy and possess expert knowledge of fact-checking best practices
- Understand the legal liabilities of stories produced by multiple content-producing platforms
- Basic knowledge of CPS/Censhare, Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Office, and Lexis-Nexis using Macintosh is preferred
