McKinley Marketing Partners’ D.C. non-profit client is seeking a Senior Major Gifts Officer/Senior Philanthropic Advisor.  The Senior Major Gifts Officer will work directly with and report to the Vice President, Marketing, Development, and Communications and be responsible for managing a portfolio of high-net-worth individual donors and prospects, as well as several foundation donors.

The Senior Major Gifts Officer will develop successful identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship techniques that result in the development of a robust pipeline and consistent upgrading of donors. The Senior Major Gifts Office also will work directly with high-level board members and volunteers fostering deep engagement and leveraging their resources to increase support for the client’s organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Thoroughly understand the organization’s mission, policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs, and finances
  • Manage a personal portfolio of over 50 high-net-worth individuals and foundations (securing six- and seven-figure gifts); to include nurturing and building strong, positive relationships with donors through consistent communication and face to face visits, managing timelines, and developing proposals
  • Leverage senior leadership, board and volunteer networks, and other organizational resources to identify, cultivate, and steward high-net-worth individuals and foundation prospective supporters and donors
  • Proactively seek new major gift prospects, successfully leveraging the client’s President, database, volunteer resources, and research tools
  • Work alongside the President and the Vice President of Marketing, Development & Communications, and the Director of Development to develop an individual giving strategy focused on increasing private sector support, creating an effective moves management system, and developing a strong case for support
  • Track prospect and donor contact, status, follow up, and essential information in the organization’s database, Salesforce
  • Communication within department and cross-functionally throughout the organization

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing or other applicable areas of study
  • 5-10 years of successful major gift fundraising experience in a complex non-profit environment securing six-and seven-figure gifts
  • Preference will be given to those candidates that come in with a well-developed network of prospective donors already in place
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies, as well as training senior and volunteer leaders in these areas
  • Proven success growing an individual major donor prospect base, managing a high-level donor portfolio, and moving donors up the giving ladder
  • Experience working with foundations including identifying foundation prospects, cultivating and stewarding foundation relationships, and developing proposals
  • Proven ability to think programmatically and to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling to potential donors, board members, volunteers, and other stakeholders
  • Experience engaging senior leaders, board members, and high-level volunteers/supporters in the fundraising process
  • Able to effectively use CRM systems, Salesforce preferred
  • A dynamic and proactive fundraiser who is determined to accomplish goals and who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment
  • An ambitious, innovative, and forward thinking approach to developing effective major gift fundraising strategies
  • The capacity and demeanor to build and maintain strong relationships with senior leaders, high-level volunteers, board members, major supporters, and other client stakeholders
  • Exhibit respect for and excellent service to donors and all supporters of the organization through prompt and courteous communications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and concisely
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to work across departments to advance fundraising efforts and continue to build a culture of philanthropy
  • Keen attention to detail with the ability to solve problems tactfully
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and a commitment to operating ‘lean’ and efficiently
  • Frequent travel required
